The Salvation Army is committed to protecting your privacy. This statement explains how we will use and protect any information that we collect from you on The Salvation Army website(s). Under the Data Protection Act, we have a legal duty to protect any personal information we collect from you. We do not pass on your details to any third party or government department unless you give us permission to do so or the law requires/permits it.

We have structured our website so that, in general, you can visit it without identifying yourself or revealing any personal information. Once you choose to provide us with any information by which you can be identified, then you can be assured that it will only be used for the purpose for which it was originally collected or compatible purposes.

We have notified the Information Commissioner of the types of personal data we process and for what purpose we use it for and whom we share it with.

The Data Protection Act provides you with rights in relation to the personal data we may hold about you, namely;

• we will provide on request a copy of your personal data that we process and information concerning the processing.
• we will prevent any data processing likely to cause damage or distress.
• we will prevent data processing for the purposes of unrequested direct marketing.
  you may take action for compensation from The Salvation Army if damage results from any breach of the Act by The Salvation Army
• you may take action to rectify, block, erase or destroy inaccurate data.

With regard to your rights to be provided with a copy of your personal data, you are entitled to this within 40 days of making the request, providing;

• the request is in writing.
• requests must contain the information required to satisfy The Salvation Army as to the identity of the person making the request (we may require proof of your identity).
• requests must contain the information required to enable The Salvation Army to locate the information which is being sought.

We may charge up to £50 for this data, depending upon the number of pages to be provided.

What information do we collect? How do we use it?

When you take part in our discussion forums, we need to know your name & email address. This allows us to track inappropriate use of the forums and prevent further abuse.

You may also volunteer to provide additional information, which we may use to personalise your browsing experience.

We may also use the information we collect to notify you occasionally about topics that you believe are relevant to you by having registered an interest in them or by having subscribed to certain pages on our site.

How do we protect information?

We apply strict security procedures in the storage and disclosure of information which you have given us, to prevent unauthorised access.

What about 'cookies'?

Cookies are small pieces of information that are stored by your web browser on your computer's hard drive. Our cookies do not contain any personally identifying or account information. They are used to manage the login process only.

• To allow you to carry information across pages of our site and avoid having to re-enter information.
• Within registration to allow you to access stored information.
• To help us recognise you as a unique visitor  when you return to our website and to allow us to tailor content or advertisements to match your preferred interests or to avoid showing you the same adverts repeatedly.

Will The Salvation Army disclose information it collects to outside parties?

We do not and will not sell, trade or rent your personal information to others. We may use your information to provide aggregate statistics about our browsers, customers, sales, traffic patterns and related information for site improvement and internal use, but these statistics will not include any personally identifying information.

Your consent

By using our web site, you consent to the collection and use of your account information by The Salvation Army (UK with the Republic of Ireland Territory). As mentioned above, this account information does not include credit card details.
