RIBA AWARDS
Monday, 28 September 2009 13:24

On Friday 25th September 2009 at the RIBA (Royal Institure of British Archtects) Eastern Region "Spirit of Ingenuity" Awards Dinner, The Salvation Army in Chelmsford, won the "COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE AWARD" CATEGORY.  This category is for projects that deomonstrate value and benefit to the community, both residential and non-residential, including village halls, community resource centre, social housing and student accommmodation"  The Jury said

"a dramatic, well executed and minimalist building located in an ill-kempt environment beside the ring road.  It is constructed of timber wall and roof panels, clad in zinc and red composite board.  The plan is clearly articulated and the building appears to work well for the very enthusiastic hands-on clients / users".

However, a new award was also institued this year and for which all of the catergory winners were considered.  The building was also voted "BUILDING OF THE YEAR" and in this connection the comment was:

"overall this building was the best building of the 18 visited and the 45 entries submitted,  Its simple concept and innovative construction and unusual details fulfill all the criteria.  The client is particularly to be congratulated for commissioning such a visionary building which serves a most vital role in its communiuty"
